The Small Vessels Manual has expanded beyond the printed and digital book, with the release of a new suite of course materials designed to support structured maritime training delivery.
Developed to sit directly alongside the Small Vessels Manual book and ebook, the course materials provide a cohesive learning framework for students, trainers and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Every unit aligns clearly with the manual, ensuring consistency across theory, teaching and assessment.
At their core, the course materials are designed to simplify delivery without compromising rigour. Content is easy to follow, clearly mapped to knowledge requirements, and structured to support both self-directed learning and trainer-led delivery – whether in person or online.
A key feature of the materials is their currency. All content reflects current laws, regulations and legislative requirements, with updates managed centrally so trainers and organisations don’t need to continually revise their own resources. This reduces workload while providing confidence in the quality and relevance of the material being delivered.
For RTOs, the packages include sample questions and answers, unit mapping, and training resources that support consistent teaching across cohorts. Rather than disparate documents or add-ons, the book, ebook and course materials function as a single, integrated system – a one-stop resource for maritime training.

Technology plays an important role. Digital access allows materials to be easily shared with students, updated efficiently, and used across different teaching environments. This flexibility supports blended delivery models and evolving training needs.
Written by an industry expert, Capt. Cal Callahan, the content reflects the practical realities of working on small vessels, covering core areas such as safety management and navigation. The course structure currently supports training up to Coxswain Grade 1, with additional courses already in development.
Small Vessels Manual and its suite of training presentations offer a clear, structured and continually updated training resource – designed to support quality learning outcomes while reducing administrative burden for educators.
